This move is one of the first 'freestyle' moves intermediate kayakers will start to learn. It gives the first sense of getting vertical, and learning about edge control and balance.
The Back Deck Roll
This roll is essential when learning freestyle. It allows the paddler to quickly recover from a cartwheel, bow stalls, and other freestyle moves when you lose your angle, and balance.
The Bow Pivot Turn
The bow pivot turn is one of the essential moves in learning how to do cartwheels. Once the boat is on edge and a powerful reverse stroke is executed, it is imperative to get the boat back to a neutral position once the bow has been engaged, to prevent from 'hitting the wall'.
The Stern Pivot Turn
The stern pivot turn is the other essential move to link in with the bow pivot turn to start 'turning wheels'. Once the bow and stern pivot turns have been mastered, linking the two will lead to cartwheels.
